Driving Sustainable Plastics: Global Compostability Standards Shaping the Future of Materials

The Push Toward Net-Zero

The global plastics industry is entering a new era of sustainability. With governments and corporations committing to net-zero targets, demand for low-carbon and circular solutions is surging. Biodegradable and compostable plastics stand out as one pathway, enabling products to return safely to nature and reducing environmental impact. For manufacturers, certification has become more than a compliance checkbox—it is a passport to participate in international markets.

The Challenge of Credibility

How can companies demonstrate that products truly meet compostability standards? The path is complex: brands must ensure biodegradability claims are credible to regulators and consumers. This is where accredited laboratories become essential. Through rigorous testing—covering biodegradation rate, disintegration, ecotoxicity, and heavy-metal analysis—manufacturers obtain science-based evidence used in applications to certification bodies.

Taiwan’s Role in Asia-Pacific

In the Asia-Pacific region, Taiwan has emerged as a hub for sustainable plastics innovation. With strong manufacturing capacity and closer alignment with global net-zero policies, local institutes provide integrated testing and documentation support that helps companies shorten timelines and manage costs while planning for international market access.

PIDC’s Contribution

The Plastics Industry Development Center (PIDC) plays a practical role in this transition. As an ISO/IEC 17025–accredited laboratory, PIDC conducts testing to standards recognized by bodies such as DIN Certco (Germany), BPI (USA), ABA (Australia), REAL (UK), and TAF (Taiwan). From industrial composting standards (e.g., EN 13432, ASTM D6400) to home composting tests (e.g., NF T51-800), PIDC provides end-to-end testing and application-documentation support. Final certifications are issued by the respective certification bodies.

Outlook

As sustainability rules tighten, credibility, certification, and innovation must advance together. Taiwan’s experience shows how regional expertise can accelerate the global shift toward a circular and low-carbon economy. For Southeast Asian companies—including exhibitors at Vietnam’s Plastics & Rubber show—engaging with accredited laboratories such as PIDC enables informed dialogue, knowledge exchange, and practical testing pathways that support internationally aligned solutions.

About PIDC

The Plastics Industry Development Center (PIDC) is a non-profit R&D institute in Taiwan focused on sustainable plastics technology. Its services span medical devices, transportation, food packaging, green energy, smart manufacturing, and agriculture. Guided by the GRASS strategy—Green, Recycled, Advanced Composites, Smart, Safe materials—PIDC develops innovative plastics and provides testing that supports industry alignment with global net-zero goals.
